First, let’s advise you on any aspect of fireplace safety.
First off, we can’t ignore safety. It may be obvious, but keep all decorations away from the reach of flame or high heat. When in doubt, err on the side of safety. Make sure safety takes precedence over beauty. As we said, it may seem self-evident, but take a moment to fireproof your mantel and any decorations you might add. Fireproof in terms of location, materials, and flammability.Along the same theme of fire safety, Old Smokey’s recommends that you clean and clear your fireplace before you decorate your mantel. Make sure you sweep cooled ashes into a dustpan. However, don’t assume the ashes are cooled off. Treat them as if they can still catch fire. Then dispose of them outside in some sort of fireproof container. Next, wipe the surrounding area with a moistened cloth.
Old Smokey’s Fireplace & Chimney has CSIA-certified professionals on staff. So, what’s next, once you have paid attention to these important fire-safety concerns?
Now, let’s can get into aesthetics.
Martha Stewart, the maven of holiday Hallmark-ish scenes of domestic delight, suggests you “visualize the scene.” As she puts it, “decide whether you want a subtle mantelscape or a showstopping display.” (“Mantelscape”? We’ve learned a new word! Thanks, Martha!) Do a little design planning. Make a little sketch, if you prefer.Next, it is wise to choose from your supply of “Santastic” seasonal decorations, the items you’ve brought down from the attic or up from the basement. These are your stockings, garlands, or wreaths – and more. Perhaps you’re into buying brand-new stockings, garlands, or wreaths. Have at it.
As for stockings, hang them evenly spaced above the hearth. Consider personal touches, such as using photos or monograms. Garlands? You can’t do any better than using freshly cut greens. Arrange them according to your artistic tastes. And try to use a wreath as a visual center, attracting eyes to your fireplace mantel.
Other design features to consider:
Collectibles! You might want to feature heirloom ornaments that have been in your family for generations. (Be careful. Don’t drop any.) Prudently and sparely featuring these items can provide an authentic and warm touch.
Of course, you may want to work in the use of electric candles or lights. Use them for both illumination and decorative effect.
With these suggestions in mind, your holiday fireplace mantel begins to take shape and assume the personality of your home. That’s an important piece of the puzzle. Let your holiday decorating reflect you and what you want. Have your mantelscape project the look and feel that shows forth your home in a way that is individual and welcoming.
