Company History

The late Steven Berryhill and Kevin DeLucenay founded Old Smokey, Inc. in 1981.  Having factory jobs they wanted to earn extra weekend income.  Both being avid "Mother Earth News" readers, noticed ads "Make A Thousand Dollars a Week Cleaning Chimneys."  Purchasing a used system along with ladders and tools, Steve's 1949 Chevrolet pickup was converted into a sweep truck.  A homemade truck cap, complete with a peaked roof, cedar shake shingles and siding, and a large rear door made this truck a "one-of-a-kind," turning heads wherever it went!  A silver paint job, hand-lettered signage and a mural depicting a chimney sweep on the back door finished the look of this unique truck.   The original showroom was housed in an old barn on the family farm.

It was very humble beginnings for the impressive company you see today.  The company has had steady growth throughout the last 25+ years.  The company location has changed over the years to the present 20,000 square foot superstore.  Though it has grown, you can ask any of the employees and they would tell you the family atmosphere is as strong today as it was 25 years ago.

Old Smokeys is making a name for itself industry-wide.  In 2004, Kevin  received "The President's Award" at the National Chimney Sweep Guild Convention.  This award, given annually to one member who has been the most instrumental in promoting the chimney sweep industry is the highest and most prestigious in the United States.  Kevin designed and built a triple-twisted chimney that adorns the top of the CSIA (Chimney Safety Institute of America) Technology Center, the Guild's training facility in Indianapolis, Indiana.  He also headed the drive for NCSG members, staff and suppliers to donate time and materials for the project.  Kevin also planned and built a four chimney training structure where new sweeps can be professionally trained and obtain the education needed to perform their duties as sweeps.   Kevin also spearheaded "Sweeps Week," an annual event in Indianapolis where sweeps from across the country meet and work at the training center to continually improve and promote consumer awareness in fire safety.

In 2006 Kevin was elected by his peers to the Board of Directors at Large and in 2007 was appointed Secretary on the Executive Board of Directors for the NCSG and CSIA.
